welcome to the world of beautiful wooden floors
wood floor sealing - varnishing
Varnish or lacquer
More durable than oil sealants, and easier to maintain, these products are typically used for mid to heavy traffic areas. Modern lacquers no longer produce the ‘plastic’ look of old and offer a silky sheen in a matt, satin or high gloss finish. Our recommended finish would be a polyurethane lacquer - highly resistant to wear but which may create some discoloration to the floor beneath. As it is not a natural material, it can restrict the breathability of your wooden floor. For areas experiencing lighter usage, a part polyurethane/part acrylic floor varnish might be preferable. This will not yellow or darken the wood in any way. For lacquered/varnished floors, we would always recommend three applications. Leave the floor for 24 hours to ensure full strength sealing.

Wood Floors - Waxing
Wax is a completely natural floor finish: safe for you, your family, your home and the environment. It offers the softest and most mellow of finishes - and leaves your floor able to breathe naturally. Wax finishes requ
ire two applications.

Hard Wax Oil
This organic product is based on natural vegetable oils and waxes. Like natural oil, it brings out the inherent colour in the
timber and emphasizes the natural grain. It has become popular in recent years with its good balance between natural oil and lacquer - combining a natural look and feel with improved durability. It is micro-porous and does not crack, flake, peel or blister. With its greater resilience to drying out than natural oil, it can be used in areas of high
humidity. Hardwax oil is easily maintained by either applying more coats or a ‘revive coat’ which is a thinned down version.

Wood Floor Oiling
Oil is an organic finish that is popular for its natural look and ease of maintenance. It has good water-repellent characteristics as well as abrasion and scuff resistance. Natural oil can dry out in humid conditions but can be easily maintained by applying more coats. These top-up the finish and cover minor damage. Coming in matt or satin finishes, each oil coat can take up to 24 hrs to dry. We can show you oils and the various other sealants for comparison.
